Hello, friends!
It’s the weekend, so I thought I’d entertain you a bit—with a story about eyebrows! ?♀️
⠀
Have you ever wondered why the Mona Lisa has no eyebrows? ☺
I bet you haven’t—almost never!
But when I look at Leonardo da Vinci’s greatest masterpiece, I can’t help but think that this beautiful woman is clearly missing something ?♀️.
Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece is over 500 years old, and there is probably no painting in the world more famous or mysterious, with so many art lovers trying to uncover its secrets.
We still don’t know for sure who is depicted in the portrait, where it was painted, whether she is truly smiling or not, and—
why she has no eyebrows.
⠀
So, where did Mona Lisa’s eyebrows go? ))
There are two main theories:
⠀
1. Remember when I wrote about how eyebrow trends have changed over time? Well, at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, it was fashionable among aristocrats to simply shave off their eyebrows ?. In fact, not only eyebrows but also part of the hairline was removed to make the forehead appear higher and rounder. That was the beauty standard back then!
⠀
2. The second theory says: The eyebrows were there!! But they faded over time…
French art expert Pascal Cotte examined Leonardo da Vinci’s painting with a special camera and discovered that Mona Lisa originally did have eyebrows. Cotte explains that if you look closely at the area near her eye, you’ll notice that the cracks around it gradually disappear. He believes this may have happened during an unsuccessful restoration attempt, which also removed her eyelashes and eyebrows.
A 240-megapixel camera allowed Pascal Cotte to reveal many secrets of the Mona Lisa.
His research concluded that 500 years ago, the Mona Lisa looked quite different: the sky above her was blue, and her skin was not yellow.
